The Ministry of Education and Science, in partnership with the United States Government, will ensure 3.2 million textbooks are printed by Ukrainian printing houses for Ukrainian school children of grades 1-2 (primary school) by the start of the school year.

We are pleased to announce a large-scale initiative — the US government has allocated 8.3 million USD to print textbooks for Ukrainian schoolchildren. With this money, it will be possible to fully provide textbooks for students of grades 1-2.

This aid is an extremely important contribution to the Ukrainian education system, especially in the conditions of Russian aggression, when the majority of public expenditures are directed to the support of our defenders. It is thanks to this support that we will do everything possible to ensure that the youngest school children receive their textbooks on time. Even despite the difficult working conditions of the printing industry and its significant destruction by the enemy.

"This support from USAID and the entire American people is more than just books. This is another manifestation of solidarity with our state, which continues the fight against evil. The enemy is consistently trying to destroy our culture, take away access to education and cripple childhood. But he won't be able to, because we are not alone in this battle," says Oksen Lisovyi, Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine.

It is expected that all textbooks for grades 1–2 will be printed by the start of the school year. The purchase of textbooks will be carried out through a competitive, transparent procurement: funding for printing will be directed to those Ukrainian publishing houses that won the competition, received the seal of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and received 10,000 or more votes based on the results of the selection of general secondary education institutions.

“Kharkiv’s printing houses produce a significant percentage of all books in Ukraine, including textbooks for Ukrainian children. By striking these printing houses, Russia is attacking Ukraine’s education system... We will continue to stand with the Ukrainian people as they defend against Russia’s barbaric war of aggression,” says National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan.

We are sincerely grateful to President Biden, the people of the United States, and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) for supporting the Ukrainian education system!
