Join the rebuilding of schools in Ukraine — now easier with a ready-to-use adaptive design

With the support of Lithuania, a high-quality adaptive design for rebuilding schools — The Future School for Ukraine — has been developed. The project includes a complete set of technical documentation for constructing a modern school, incorporates security priorities, and follows principles of inclusive design. The project was initiated and developed with Lithuania’s support.
The adaptive design is now available to communities and donors, helping accelerate reconstruction efforts and significantly reduce costs.

“For communities, having a ready-made adaptive design greatly reduces both the time and costs needed to prepare technical documentation. Instead of spending months developing a school project from scratch, it is enough to adapt the design to local conditions and site-specific requirements.
This project is also important for potential donors. One of the Ministry’s priorities is to continue attracting partners to support education, particularly school reconstruction. Having adaptive designs makes it much easier for donors to move from intent to implementation, offering a ready-made solution for rebuilding,” said Yevhen Kudriavets, First Deputy Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine.
In addition to developing the design itself, with Lithuania’s support, the first school based on this project will be built in Zhytomyr. This school will become the first real-life implementation of the model and a reference point for future school reconstruction projects across the country.
“The Future School for Ukraine project has passed the required expertise review and complies with Ukraine’s State Building Norms (DBN). It aligns with New European Bauhaus values and meets all applicable EU regulatory and quality standards for school and public buildings. Its primary goal is to save time and resources in the recovery process while ensuring exceptional quality. We are starting in Zhytomyr, and we invite partners to join us in rebuilding education together,” added Artūras Žarnovskis, Head of Lithuanian Programmes “Co-create Future of Ukraine”, Central Project Management Agency.

The adaptive technical design of The Future School for Ukraine won a global architectural competition initiated by Lithuania. The winning Italian–Ukrainian team of architects successfully passed the state expertise process in compliance with Ukrainian standards, including safety, durability, accessibility, engineering systems, and energy efficiency. The project has been officially published in Ukraine’s State Electronic Construction System, and a practical implementation guide.
The Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine is grateful to Lithuania for its support and invites donors and partners to join the reconstruction efforts and use the project for further scaling.

Rebuilding education infrastructure remains a top priority for the Ministry. The main goal is to rebuild back better, in line with modern standards and EU principles. This is why the Ministry, together with the World Bank, is also implementing the strategic initiative BUILDING FORWARD BETTER — an infrastructure investment plan that will change the approach to creating educational spaces and align standards with the EU. Within this initiative, reusable designs for modernizing or constructing kindergartens and schools are being developed, along with an investment plan, a long-term recovery strategy, and an education infrastructure planning framework. The project is currently under development.
