Within the framework of The Global Coalition of Ukrainian Studies, an online meeting was held with representatives of foreign higher education institutions, and potential future members of the Coalition. This is an important step in jointly developing the goals and priorities of the Coalition and the overall development of Ukrainian studies abroad.

The meeting was initiated by the coordinating organizations, namely, the Ukrainian Institute, the Crimean Platform, the Presidential Foundation for Support of Education, Science and Sports, the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine. Representatives of the educational sector from around the world, including the UK, Canada, the USA, Japan, Australia, Poland, Norway, Sweden, and Switzerland, took part in the joint discussion and development of the strategy.

Spreading knowledge about Ukraine and uniting the world around this topic is an important priority for our country. Therefore, the Global Coalition of Ukrainian Studies should become a tool for creating awareness, subjectivity, and telling the truth about our country and history.

“The Global Coalition of Ukrainian Studies should be a joint effort to ensure that Ukraine is studied not as a footnote to someone else’s history, but as a nation with a rich cultural legacy. In the 1920s, Ukrainian emigrants were among the first to offer the world an alternative to the Russian-Soviet narrative on Ukrainian history, culture, and society in the international academic community. This is how the first Ukrainian studies emerged, and the diaspora became the voice of the Ukrainian people. Our goal is to continue strengthening Ukrainian studies,” said Mychailo Wynnyckyj, Deputy Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine.

Crimean Tatar studies must also become part of the project, as Crimea is an integral part of Ukraine. The Global Coalition will popularize knowledge about Ukraine, in particular about the Crimean Tatars and other indigenous peoples of our country, and coordinate relevant initiatives within the framework of public policy.

What the Global Coalition of Ukrainian Studies offers:

  1. at the basic level - foreign higher education institutions will be able to open and expand courses in Ukrainian language and culture, as well as hold public events on Ukrainian studies.
  2. at the medium level - holding exhibitions and presentations of foreign higher education institutions jointly with Ukrainian ones, as well as cooperation with specialists in Ukrainian studies.
  3. at a high level - opening a separate department or center for Ukrainian studies, conducting a study visit to Ukraine, organizing a conference, roundtable, project competition, or summer school.

We call for cooperation, joint development of interdisciplinary studies of Ukraine, and the formation of an objective understanding of Ukrainian history, culture, and modernity in the global academic space.

The goal of the studies is to unite all initiatives aimed at studying and researching Ukrainian culture, history, language, and literature. The Coalition will create an effective platform for coordinating and developing Ukrainian studies. This, in turn, will help to strengthen Ukraine's subjectivity in the international arena, destroy Russian narratives, and spread Ukrainian soft power in other countries.

The Global Coalition of Ukrainian Studies is being created with the support of First Lady Olena Zelenska. It is a joint initiative of the Ministry of Education and Science, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Presidential Foundation for Support of Education, Science and Sports, the Ukrainian Institute, and the Office of the Crimean Platform.
