DAAD

Ukraine has been actively involved in the programs of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), one of the largest educational organizations in the world, for 14 years already. DAAD provides students, postgraduates and teachers with mobility and enables talented young people throughout the world to get academic internships or increase their qualification in Germany. In 1998 Memorandum of Cooperation between the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and the German Academic Exchange Service was signed. This agreement involved the establishment of DAAD representation in Kyiv.

PROGRAMS WHICH ARE currently in effect IN UKRAINE AND IN OTHER COUNTRIES OF THE WORLD

Classic Scholarship Programs: 10-months scholarships for graduated bachelors, specialists and magisters, 1-10-months scholarships for research (primarily for post-graduate students) and other scholarships for students of different directions.

Viadrina University's program: Every year the European University Viadrina in Frankfurt-am-Oder provides several openings for Ukrainian students and specialists. This program is funded by DAAD. The degree-seeking student specialty must be a lawyer, an economist or a cultural expert (for example, a historian, a political scientist, a sociologist, a philosopher or studing comparative philology or literature). Germanists can not participate in this program. Detailed information about this scholarship is usually received at the end of January each year. Submission of documents lasts from February to the end of March.

At the moment, the following programs are offered: European studies (for those who have a bachelor's degree), Magister legum (for those who already have a specialist or master's degree in Ukraine) and the study internship to prepare for exams (for those who take exams soon and, for example, want to prepare their examination work in Frankfurt, including work in the library, consulting with scientists, etc.). The internship includes two-month language courses (August-September). The candidates speaking well or very well in German have a privilege to get into.

Special programs: For specialists or scientist of different directions the programs may have focused specialization and special requirements.

Support for German-language courses: two-week courses for German language teachers at technical, legal or economic faculties are offered. These courses are usually conducted in Ukraine and funded by DAAD. Distribution of information on this program and filing of applications is made in advance through the DAAD office in Kyiv and DAAD lecturers in Ukraine.

OTHER PROGRAMS WHICH ARE HELD OR SUPPORTED BY DAAD

  • Lecturer Program: DAAD sends young specialists to foreign universities (according to the propositions of these universities). They work at the German language departments of Ukrainian universities. The lecturers provide consultations on scholarship, higher education and training opportunities in Germany. Scholarship seekers must pass the necessary tests of the German language. Today, 9 lecturers work in Ukraine (in Kyiv, Lviv, Kharkiv, Donetsk, Dnipropetrovsk, Chernivtsi and Odesa).
  • Short-term and long-term Assistant professor programme( Kurzzeit - und Langzeitdozenturen ): for a specific request from a Ukrainian university, DAAD can send a German scientist for teaching at a Ukrainian university. Within the framework of the Kurzzeitdozentur program, DAAD may support for German scientist teaching up to 6 months at Ukrainian University. Within the framework of the Langzeitdozentur program DAAD may support for German scientist teaching for many years. The application form to DAAD must be sent by a German university or a German scientist.

Guest   assistant professor programmes ( G astdozenturen ): at the request of the German university DAAD finances an internship of a Ukrainian scientist at a German university for teaching. The program usually lasts one year, but not less than one semester.

Support for inter-university partnership: If there is a formal partnership agreement between the Ukrainian and German universities, DAAD may sponsor it. For example, DAAD can fund the exchange of scientific workers and students or joint academic projects. The application form to DAAD must be sent by a German university.

  • Support for partnership between institutes of Germanistics: DAAD may support co-operation between institutes or departments of Germanistics German and Ukrainian universities (including the possibility of exchanging scientists and students). The application form for DAAD must be sent by a German university. It is also necessary to add the concrete plans for cooperation (bilateral management of graduate thesis, guest visits of scientists, students, etc.). There is no support for non-linguistic students learning German.
  • Support for English-language coursesit means some of new programs of German universities, first of all, so-called Auslandsorientierte Studiengange and Master Plus - Programme. They are designed for those who want to study in Germany, but do not speak German sufficiently. Many universities offer programs including lectures and seminars in English during the first school year. They are prepared for students and people with a higher education who would like to study in Germany but can speak only English. For foreign students there are special curators (Tutoren) to who students can apply for getting answers on training and other questions. At the same time students attend German language courses and, as a rule during the third year of studying, they start listening lectures in German. Auslandsorientierte Studiengange offers a full-time education program and an opportunity to get a Bachelor degree, sometimes Diplom or Master. Master Plus - Programme focuses to those who got no less than bachelorship in Ukraine. After graduating from Master Plus - Program it is possible to get Diplom or Master degree (for 3-5 semesters) and a Philosophy Doctor (for the next 6 semesters).
  • DAAD supports this program among others (funds for curators, training facilities, etc.). It is aimed, first of all, at those degree seeking applicants who are going to provide their financing themselves. In this case a scholarship is usually not given. Since education at German universities are still free of charge (now there question on student fee is under consideration), the main costs should be spent on dwelling and living.

At the DAAD office in Kyiv it is possible to get the detailed description of all the English language programs offered as well as the addresses of the universities including the contacts of the respective representatives.
